Christmas coffee table decor goes wrong in one way: it takes the whole table. Then the mugs end up on the floor.
These are 12 ways to style a coffee table for Christmas. Each is built around one hero piece and takes about ten minutes.
Every idea sits on the same table: a low rectangular light oak one, about four feet long. Yours will differ, and the proportions still carry over.
My one rule for coffee table decor in December is that part of the top stays bare. Every idea below says exactly where the mug, the remote and your book still go.
Some are Christmas tray decor ideas, some are a single bowl, and one is only a runner and a lantern. None needs a big spend, which is how I approach a cozy living room on a budget the rest of the year too.
If the top is already buried under mail and chargers, clear it first. My small living room storage ideas will find those a home.

1. How to Style a Coffee Table for Christmas With a Rattan Tray and Three Pillar Candles

A round tray turns three candles into one object. This one is woven rattan, about 14 inches across, with a low rim.
Stand three ivory flameless pillars inside at three heights, then lay one short sprig of cedar beside them.
Park it at one end. The other half of the top stays completely bare for mugs and the remote.
Styling tip: I use flameless pillars here. People reach across this table all evening, and a sleeve near a real flame is not festive.

2. How to Style a Coffee Table for Christmas With a Ceramic Bowl of Ornaments

A bowl of ornaments is the laziest idea here, and one of the best. This one is about ten inches long and deep enough to heap a dozen small baubles.
The glaze is a soft grey white with a warm brown rim, which flatters matte deep green and burgundy.
Set it dead center and leave both ends of the table empty.
Styling tip: I buy shatterproof ornaments for this and mix two sizes. One size alone looks like a bowl of fruit.

3. How to Style a Coffee Table for Christmas With a Small Tabletop Tree

A two foot tree on the table beats no tree at all. Look for a small unlit one with its base wrapped in burlap.
Wind one string of warm white micro lights through it and tuck two small gifts in plain kraft paper at the base.
Stand it at the far end, away from the sofa. Two thirds of the top stays clear.
Styling tip: I tuck the battery pack behind the burlap base, on the side facing away from the sofa. Nobody needs to see how the magic works.

4. How to Style a Coffee Table for Christmas With a White Ceramic Village

White on white is what keeps a Christmas village calm. This set is matte white porcelain: one church and two cottages, each about five inches tall, with LED lights built in.
Line them up on a folded natural linen napkin with the four small bottle brush trees between them.
Keep the row along the back edge, so the front half nearest the sofa stays clear.
Styling tip: I switch the houses on at dusk and always keep the napkin underneath. It makes three small buildings read as one scene.

5. How to Style a Coffee Table for Christmas With a Cedar Ring Around a Hurricane

Glass around a candle makes one small glow look like more. This hurricane is mid height on a short stem, and takes a pillar about three inches wide and four tall.
Drop a faux cedar candle ring around the foot and stop there.
It is one object in the middle of the table, so a mug fits on either side.
Styling tip: I put a flameless pillar inside. And with small children in the house, anything glass moves up to a shelf they can’t reach.

6. How to Style a Coffee Table for Christmas With a Stack of Books and a Brass Bell

Books give a small object a stage. Stack three linen covered books flat and stand the bell on top.
The bell is bright polished brass with a turned wooden handle, about seven inches tall. Tie a short length of deep red velvet ribbon to the handle.
Keep the stack on one corner and leave the rest of the top bare.
Styling tip: I turn the books so the page edges face the room. Fair warning: this bell is loud, and someone will ring it.

7. How to Style a Coffee Table for Christmas With a Dough Bowl of Pinecones and Clementines

A dough bowl is the one centerpiece you can refill all winter. This one is carved wood, 17 inches long, 8 wide and 3 deep.
Fill it with pinecones, whole clementines and a few cinnamon sticks, then set it lengthwise down the middle.
A clear strip stays along both long edges for cups. It smells better than any candle I own.
Styling tip: I lay the pinecones first and press the clementines in last, so the orange sits on top. Eat them and refill.

8. How to Style a Coffee Table for Christmas With a Row of Bottle Brush Trees on a Linen Runner

Bottle brush trees need a base line, or they look scattered. Lay a narrow natural linen runner across one end of the table and stand five trees along it in mixed heights.
These are frosted, in dark and lighter green, and the tallest is just under ten inches.
The other two thirds of the table stays open.
Styling tip: I use five of the nine and put the other four on a shelf. Odd numbers and uneven gaps look less like a shop display.

9. How to Style a Coffee Table for Christmas With a Glass Cloche Over a Mini Scene

A cloche makes almost anything look deliberate. This one is clear glass on a rustic brown wood base, with seven inches of height inside.
Under it goes one tiny bottle brush tree, a small ceramic deer and a pinch of faux snow.
Set it off center with nothing beside it. A full half of the top is free.
Styling tip: I measure the little tree before I buy it. Anything taller than seven inches will not fit under the glass.

10. How to Style a Coffee Table for Christmas With a Pedestal Stand of Clementines and Greenery

Lifting fruit off the table is what turns it into a centerpiece. This wooden pedestal stand is about twelve inches across, with a beaded rim and a distressed brown finish.
Pile it with clementines, a few with leaves on, and tuck in two short sprigs of rosemary and pine.
It stands at one end, and the top around it stays clear.
Styling tip: I leave the clementines in their skins. The stand is a decor piece, so anything peeled or cut goes on a plate first.

11. How to Style a Coffee Table for Christmas With Taper Candles in Three Brass Holders

These are tall for a coffee table. The set is three slim brass holders, the tallest about ten inches, so about twenty with a taper in it.
Group them on a small round wooden board and tie one green velvet bow to the tallest. Both ends of the table stay empty.
That works when nobody needs to see over them. Otherwise, slide the board to one end.
Styling tip: I use flameless tapers on a table people reach across. Real ones are for evenings when I’m sitting right there, and they never burn in an empty room.

12. How to Style a Coffee Table for Christmas With a Tartan Runner and One Lantern

A runner is the only idea here you can put a cup straight onto. This one is red tartan linen, 14 by 36 inches, so bare wood shows at both ends of a four foot table.
One end takes a single black metal lantern with a flameless pillar inside and a small bundle of pine tied with twine.
The rest of the runner stays empty for mugs.
Styling tip: I like the bare wood showing at each end. A runner that stops short looks placed, not draped.

6 Christmas Coffee Table Mistakes to Skip
Tick each one off before you call the room done.
☐ Covering the whole table top. Keep at least half the surface bare, or a clear strip about six inches deep along the sofa side. Every seat needs a spot for a mug within arm’s reach.
☐ Tall pieces between you and the television. Anything over about 12 inches belongs at one end of the table, not in the middle of the view. Sit in your usual seat and check the sightline before you call it done.
☐ Real flames on a table people reach across. Use flameless candles on a coffee table, in warm white. If you light a real taper, stay in the room and blow it out before you leave.
☐ Glass at a small child’s height. A coffee table stands about 16 to 18 inches high, which is exactly toddler height. Move anything glass to a shelf above 4 feet and keep the wood, rattan and linen pieces down low.
☐ Small things scattered across the top. Give every group one base: a tray, a board, a runner or a stack of books. Three or five pieces on one base read as a single object, and the table reads as tidy.
☐ A runner hanging off both ends. On a coffee table a runner should stop short of the edges. Pick one about 12 inches shorter than the table, so roughly 6 inches of wood shows at each end.
Pick one idea and give it ten minutes tonight. If the table still looks bare tomorrow, add a sprig of cedar before you add another object.
And if the room around the table needs calming first, start with my guide to a calm, pared-back living room.
A coffee table is finished when there is still room to put your cup down.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you decorate a coffee table for Christmas without cluttering it?
Choose one grouping and give it one base, such as a tray, a bowl or a runner. Then leave at least half the top bare, so mugs, the remote and a book still have a place.
How tall should Christmas coffee table decor be?
Under about 12 inches is comfortable for anything in the middle of the table, because you can see over it from the sofa.Taller pieces, like taper candles, belong at one end.
Can I use real candles on a coffee table?
You can, but I’d choose flameless ones, since sleeves, sprigs of greenery and children all pass over this table. If you light real tapers, stay in the room and put them out before you leave it.
What Christmas coffee table decor is safe with toddlers or pets?
Stick to pieces that can be knocked over without breaking: a rattan tray, a wooden dough bowl, bottle brush trees or a linen runner.Skip glass, real flames and any small ornament that fits in a mouth.
Do these ideas work on a round coffee table?
Yes. Put a single round piece, like the tray, the bowl or the pedestal stand, in the center. Then keep a clear ring about six inches wide around the edge for cups.
