16 Christmas Gift Wrapping Ideas

The best Christmas gift wrapping ideas start with one roll of brown paper, because plain kraft goes with every ribbon, every sprig and every tree.

I stopped buying printed paper a few years ago. Half a roll was always left in January, and it never matched the next year’s.

Brown paper gift wrapping fixes that. What changes from parcel to parcel is the tie and the topper: velvet, jute, a wax seal, a dried orange slice.

Two habits make any of these look sharp. Use double-sided tape so no seam shows, and pinch a crisp crease along every edge of the box.

Each of the 16 ideas below is one wrap you can copy tonight, with the steps in order and the one supply worth buying.

1. A Wide Green Velvet Bow on Plain Brown Paper

Christmas gift wrapping ideas: brown kraft paper parcels tied with wide forest green velvet bows under a lit Christmas tree

One wide velvet bow on plain brown paper is the whole look, and it is the wrap I use most.

Wrap the box in kraft paper. Cross a 1.5 inch forest green velvet ribbon around it and tie a soft, floppy bow with long tails, then cut the ends on a slant.

Most people cut the ribbon too short. Allow about five times the box’s longest side.

2. A Wound Jute Band with an Olive Sprig

Brown paper Christmas gifts with an off centre band of wound jute twine and an olive sprig, stacked on an entryway bench under a wreath

Wrap the box in brown paper, then wind natural jute twine six times around one end, about a third of the way in. Knot it underneath.

The band sits off centre on purpose, and that is what makes it look considered.

Slip an olive or rosemary sprig under the band. Keep the turns tight and side by side, because crossed loops read as a mistake.

3. Wax Sealed Parcels with a Tree Stamp

Kraft paper Christmas parcels with thin ivory ribbon and a deep red wax seal pressed with a tree shape, on a dining table beside the seal stamp and wax

Cross a thin ivory cotton ribbon once around a kraft parcel and knot it flat. Press a wax seal with a tree design right where the ribbon meets.

Choose a deep red or green wax. Melting it takes a flame, so this one is an adult’s job.

I let the wax cool for a few seconds before pressing, or the stamp sinks straight through to the paper.

4. A Furoshiki Wrap in a Plain Cotton Cloth

Christmas gifts wrapped furoshiki style in plain natural cotton cloth with a cedar sprig in each knot, in a rattan basket beside a sofa

A furoshiki wrap needs no paper and no tape, and the cloth is a second gift.

Lay the box diagonally on a plain natural cotton square, the kind sold as a flour sack towel. Knot two opposite corners over the top, then the other two, and push a cedar sprig through the knot.

Iron the cloth first. Fold lines from the packet show on every side.

5. A Frayed Linen Band on White Paper

White paper Christmas gifts with a flat band of frayed beige linen ribbon tied in a small knot, laid on a bed with oat linen bedding and a small wreath

Wrap the box in plain white paper with the seam underneath. Run a 1.5 inch frayed linen ribbon flat around the middle and tie one small knot, no bow.

The raw edge against smooth white paper does all the work.

Trim both ends to about an inch. Long tails turn a calm band into a limp bow.

6. Snowflake Stamped Brown Paper

Brown kraft paper Christmas gifts hand stamped with white snowflakes and tied with white cotton string, on a desk beside the stamps and an ink pad

Stamp the paper before you wrap, flat on a desk. Press small snowflake stamps into an ink pad and scatter them loosely over brown kraft, with a few running off the edge.

The stamps come without ink, so add a white or dark ink pad. Let the paper dry, wrap, and tie with plain white cotton string.

Resist neat rows. Uneven spacing is what looks like falling snow.

7. A Bronze Bell and a Blank Tag on Baker’s Twine

Small brown paper Christmas parcels tied with red and white baker's twine, a blank kraft tag and an aged bronze jingle bell, lined along a mantel with a pine garland

Tie a kraft parcel with red and white baker’s twine, crossed once. Before the final knot, thread on a blank kraft tag and one small aged bronze jingle bell.

The bell is what people notice first, because the gift rings when it is picked up.

One bell per parcel is plenty. Write the name on the back of the tag so the front stays plain.

8. Layered Ivory and Rust Ribbons on Black Paper

Three black paper Christmas gifts in graded sizes with a wide ivory ribbon and a narrow rust ribbon tied in a flat knot, on a sideboard with pinecones and cedar

Black paper looks sharp in a pile of brown and white parcels. Wrap the box, lay a narrow rust ribbon on top of a wide ivory one, and tie both together in a single flat knot.

I keep this one for three boxes in graded sizes, set side by side.

Dark paper shows every wrinkle and every strip of tape. Use double-sided tape inside the seams.

9. A Dried Orange and Cinnamon Topper

Brown paper Christmas gifts tied with thin twine and topped with a dried orange slice and two cinnamon sticks, on a kitchen table with a pine sprig

Tie a kraft parcel with thin twine and stop before the last knot. Thread the twine through a dried orange slice, lay two cinnamon sticks beneath it and knot everything down.

It is the only wrap here you can smell from across the room.

Keep the slices and sticks dry until the day. A damp slice goes soft and marks the paper.

10. A Pleated Fan Fold in Off White Paper

Off white paper Christmas gifts with a band of sharp pleats across the front and a thin deep green ribbon, stacked on a coffee table beside a small potted evergreen

Before wrapping, fold a band of five or six sharp pleats across the off white paper, each about half an inch deep. Tape them flat on the reverse.

Wrap the box with the pleats across the front and run one thin deep green ribbon under them.

Run a thumbnail along every fold.

Soft pleats disappear, and crisp ones catch the light.

11. Bottles and Odd Shapes Rolled in Wide Kraft

A bottle rolled in brown kraft paper and tied at the neck with burgundy ribbon and cedar, beside a tin wrapped like a cracker, on a kitchen counter at Christmas

Awkward gifts wrap easily once you stop trying to turn them into boxes.

Roll a bottle in wide brown kraft, gather the paper at the neck and tie it with burgundy ribbon and a cedar sprig. Wrap a round tin like a cracker, tied at both ends.

A narrow roll is the usual problem. You want 30 inches of width to cover a bottle in one piece.

12. A Tied Tower of Three Boxes

A tower of three Christmas gifts in kraft and white paper tied together with ivory cotton herringbone ribbon, on the bottom steps of a staircase with a pine garland

Wrap three boxes in graded sizes, in kraft or white paper. Stack them largest first, then tie the tower as one gift with a single length of ivory cotton herringbone tape and a simple bow on top.

It is my answer to three small presents for one person.

Put a square of double-sided tape between the boxes, or the stack slides the moment it is lifted.

13. Hand Drawn Paper in White Paint Marker

Brown kraft paper Christmas gifts covered in white hand drawn trees, stars and snowflakes and tied with red cotton string, on a living room rug beside the tree

Roll brown kraft out on the floor and draw trees, stars and snowflakes all over it in white paint marker. Pictures only, loose and uneven.

Let it dry, wrap as usual and tie with plain red cotton string.

These markers are made for teenagers and adults, so younger children need an adult beside them. Cover the rug first, because acrylic ink does not wash out.

14. Red and Green Tartan with Plain Tags

Christmas gifts wrapped in red tartan and green tartan paper with blank kraft tags on jute twine, along a window seat with snow outside

Tartan paper is busy enough, so skip the bow. This kind is reversible, red tartan on one side and green on the other, and I mix both across one pile.

Finish each parcel with a blank kraft tag on a single loop of jute, and nothing else.

Line the pattern up at the seam. A plaid that jumps where the paper meets is the first thing the eye catches.

15. Green Paper with a Pine and Berry Pick

Deep green paper Christmas gifts tied with natural twine and a small faux pine pick with a pinecone and red berries, displayed on a bookshelf with bottle brush trees

Wrap the box in deep green paper and cross natural twine once around it. Tie a small faux pine pick at the centre, the kind with one pinecone and a cluster of red berries.

That touch of red against the green reads as Christmas from the doorway.

Keep the pick small. Anything longer than the box is wide gets crushed under the tree.

16. Wood Bead Ends on Jute Twine

Small brown paper Christmas parcels tied with jute twine, the ends threaded with pale wood beads and an evergreen sprig under the knot, on a bedroom dresser

Small boxes suit this best. Tie kraft paper with thin jute and tuck a short evergreen sprig under the knot.

Thread three unfinished wood beads onto each loose end and knot below the last one.

Pale wood against brown paper is quiet, and it looks handmade in the best way.

Check the bead hole before you start. It has to be wider than the twine.

6 Christmas Gift Wrapping Mistakes to Skip

Tick each one off before you call the room done.

☐  Shiny tape across the top of the box. Turn the box so the long seam sits on the bottom, and hold it with double-sided tape inside the overlap. On plain paper, every visible strip shows.

☐  Soft, rounded edges. After taping, pinch thumb and finger along all 12 edges of the box. It takes 20 seconds and makes thin paper look expensive.

☐  Fresh greenery tied on a week early. Wrap and tie as early as you like, then tuck in real cedar, olive or rosemary only a day or two before giving. Use faux or dried sprigs on anything that has to wait.

☐  A different look on every parcel. Pick one paper and two or three of these wraps, then repeat them across the pile. A tree looks calmer with a few looks repeated than with one of everything.

☐  Real candles beside the gift pile. Paper, dried orange and greenery all burn fast. Keep real flames at least 3 feet from the tree and the parcels, and use flameless candles anywhere closer.

☐  Raised toppers on gifts that travel. Wax seals crack and orange slices snap in a suitcase or the post. Pack the topper in a small bag and tie it on when you arrive, or choose a flat band of twine.

How Much Paper and Ribbon One Box Really Needs

Wasted paper comes from guessing. Set the box on the paper and roll it over once: you need enough to go all the way around, plus about 2 inches of overlap.

At each open end, the paper should reach a little more than halfway up the side of the box.

Any more than that and the folds bunch into a thick lump that will not lie flat.

Ribbon follows a rule too. A cross wrap with a bow takes about five times the box’s longest side, and a flat band with a knot takes one trip around plus 6 inches.

I cut the ribbon first and the paper second, so a short spool never surprises me at the last box.

Start with one roll of brown paper and one ribbon you love, then wrap everything in that pair.

Add a second idea only when the first pile is done.

Two kinds of parcel under a tree look planned. You will also finish wrapping a good deal sooner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make brown paper gift wrapping look elegant?

Crisp creases, tape that does not show and one good ribbon do most of it.Then add a single natural topper, such as a cedar sprig or a dried orange slice, and stop there.

How much ribbon do I need to wrap a Christmas gift?

For a ribbon crossed both ways with a bow on top, cut about five times the longest side of the box. A 10 inch box needs roughly 50 inches.

How far ahead can I put real greenery on wrapped gifts?

Add it a day or two before giving. Cedar and rosemary hold their color longest out of water.Wrap and tie earlier, then slide the sprig under the ribbon at the end.

Can you wrap a gift without tape?

Yes. A cloth furoshiki wrap is held only by its knots, and a paper parcel tied firmly with twine crossed both ways stays shut without any tape.

Do dried orange slices and cinnamon sticks keep on a gift?

They keep for weeks as long as they stay dry.Store spare slices in a paper bag at room temperature, and throw out any that turn soft or sticky.
