A Christmas bedroom has one job the living room doesn’t: you still have to sleep in it.
So most Christmas bedroom decor fails the same way. It’s too bright, too busy and blinking at midnight.
My rule for every idea here: the lights are steady and on a timer, the candles are flameless, and nothing hangs on the wall above the pillows.
That leaves plenty to work with. Flannel sheets, a garland resting on the headboard, a slim tree in the corner, a wreath on a wardrobe door.
Each of these 18 ideas is built from two or three real pieces you can buy now, and most of them go up in ten minutes without a nail.
If your room is already warm and pared back, you’re halfway to a cozy Christmas bedroom. Pick one idea, maybe two, and stop there.
1. White Percale, a Cedar Garland on the Headboard and Green Velvet Lumbars

The garland goes on the headboard ledge, never on the wall above your pillows.
Six feet of real-touch cedar runs the width of a queen headboard with a little to spare, and the wired branches stay where you bend them. Crisp white percale and two dark green velvet lumbars finish it.
Green and white is all a bedroom needs in December.

2. Red Plaid Flannel Sheets With Chunky Ivory Knit Pillows

Put the plaid on the sheets, not the duvet, and it shows only where the bed is turned back.
This flannel is a red and khaki plaid, softer on the eye than a true tartan. Fold it over a cream quilt you already own and lean two chunky hand knit ivory pillows in front.
A little plaid goes further than a lot.

3. Bottlebrush Trees and Flameless Tapers in Brass Holders

A nightstand is the one place I decorate in miniature.
Stand three bottlebrush trees in graded heights at the back, then two ivory flameless tapers in antique brass holders. Leave the front edge clear for your book and a glass of water.
Set them to steady, on the timer. A real flame has no place beside a pillow.

4. Evergreen Velvet Quilt, Ivory Faux Fur and Bells on the Bedpost

In a dark room, go darker: a deep green velvet quilt does the work of a whole box of decorations.
Fold an ivory faux fur throw across the foot so the bed doesn’t read as one solid block. Then tie the strand of gold bells to a bedpost by its velvet ribbon.
It can stay on until March.
5. Scandinavian Red and White With a Heart Garland on the Footboard

Red and white only works when white wins, about three parts to one.
Keep the bedding white. Add two red ticking stripe pillows and a Christmas red chenille throw folded at the foot.
The embroidered heart garland ties across the iron footboard, where its beads and tassels catch a little light.
It’s the cheeriest bed here, and still calm.

6. A Dresser With a Mini Wreath on the Mirror and Flameless Pillars

The dresser is where the decorations belong if you want the bed left alone.
Hang one mini pine and red berry wreath on the mirror with ribbon. Group three ivory flameless pillars on a tray you own, timer set, and fill a bowl with champagne baubles.
One styled surface is enough for a whole room.

7. A Window Seat With Plaid Pillows and Candles on the Sill

Window candles are the oldest trick here, and still the best one from the street.
Line the sill with battery candles in their white holders, set to steady, on a timer. Two red and green plaid pillows turn the seat into somewhere to sit with a book.
A lit window makes the whole room feel occupied.

8. A Bench With a Faux Fur Throw and an LED Lantern

The foot of the bed is the only spot in a bedroom that can take a full vignette.
Fold an ivory ruched faux fur throw over one end of the bench. Set the black metal and glass lantern beside it: a rechargeable LED, so no cord and no flame.
Add a basket of pinecones below.
Nothing here needs a nail.
9. A Slim Pencil Tree in the Corner of a Small Bedroom

A five foot pencil tree fits where a chair wouldn’t, so it’s the right tree for a bedroom.
This one comes pre-lit in warm white with flocked tips and pinecones, so it needs very few ornaments. A square woven collar hides the stand, even in the tiniest bedroom.
In a small room, slim beats full every time.

10. A Sage Green Guest Room With a Lit Pine Wreath on the Wardrobe

Guests don’t need your reds: sage flannel says December without shouting it.
Sage flannel sheets go on the bed, a white waffle throw across the foot. The 26 inch Norfolk pine wreath hangs on the wardrobe door, battery lights on a timer.
I’d do the same in a pared-back guest bedroom.
The wreath is the only decoration this room needs.

11. A Kids’ Room in Red Gingham With Star Lights at the Window

In a child’s room the bedding is the decoration: it can’t be pulled down.
Brick red gingham on a twin bed does it. Run warm white star lights around the window frame, away from the bed, on steady, timer set.
The beaded tree pillow is decorative, so it comes off the bed at night.
Kids notice the lights first anyway.

12. A Teen Room With a Curtain of Lights Behind the Desk

Teenagers want lights, so give them one wall and keep it away from the bed.
Hang the curtain behind the desk, on steady, with its six hour timer. A cream flannel duvet cover and a two foot flocked tree keep the rest quiet.
It’s how I’d handle any small teen bedroom.
One glowing wall beats lights everywhere.

13. An Attic Room With a Lit Pine Garland Along the Beam

A sloped ceiling already feels like a cabin, so one lit garland on the beam is enough.
This Norfolk pine garland is pre-lit and battery run, so no cord trails down. Tie it on with twine, clear of the pillows.
A garnet rib knit throw on the low bed adds the only red.
Attic rooms were made for December.
14. Burgundy Velvet Pillows and a Pine Wreath on the Headboard

Two velvet pillow covers change a bed faster than any new duvet.
Burgundy against a flax linen headboard looks rich without going dark. Loop a long ribbon over the top of the headboard and tie the Norfolk pine wreath to it, flat against the fabric.
It hangs on the bed itself, not the wall above.
Burgundy is the grown-up red.

15. A Canopy Bed Wrapped in Pine Garland and Fairy Lights

Wrap two posts, not four, or the bed looks like a parade float.
The pine garlands come as two six foot lengths, one per post at the foot. Wind warm white fairy lights through each, set to steady.
One olive plaid pillow on white bedding is all the pattern it needs.
A canopy frame is the best garland holder there is.

16. Ivory Flannel, Snowflake Pillows and a Wood Bead Garland

Not every Christmas bed needs red or green: ivory on ivory with one raised snowflake is plenty.
Ivory flannel sheets do the warm part. Two white snowflake-embroidered pillows sit in front, and a nine foot wood bead garland drapes in two loose swags across the cane headboard.
This is the one I’d leave up through February.

17. A Bedside Corner With a Lit Birch Tree and a Sheepskin Rug

The gap between the bed and the window is the best spot for a tree that isn’t a tree.
A four foot lit birch takes almost no floor. Lay the faux sheepskin where your feet land in the morning and put the green wool plaid pillow on the chair.
Bare branches with warm lights still look right long after the 25th.

18. Knit Stockings on the Footboard With a Green Plaid Throw

No mantel? A spindle footboard holds stockings just as well.
Tie two ivory cable knit stockings to the spindles with ribbon. Lay the green and ivory plaid throw across the foot of a cream matelasse quilt, fringe hanging over the side.
Keep the stockings light: a fir sprig each until Christmas Eve.
Stockings belong where you wake up.

6 Christmas Bedroom Mistakes That Cost You Sleep
Lights that blink, chase or change color. Choose the steady setting and warm white only. If a string has eight modes, the steady one is the only one a bedroom needs.
Anything hung on the wall above the pillows. Rest garlands on the headboard ledge and hang wreaths on a door, a mirror or the front of the headboard. If it could land on your face at 3 a.m., move it.
Real candles burning at bedtime. Use flameless candles within arm’s reach of bedding or curtains. If you do light a real one, keep it at least 12 inches from anything that burns and blow it out before you lie down.
Lights with no timer. Set every string to switch off within an hour of your usual bedtime, or put plug-in lights on a cheap outlet timer. Getting out of a warm bed to turn off a tree gets old by the third night.
Three patterns on one bed. Pick one pattern, plaid or stripe or gingham, and let everything else be texture: knit, velvet, flannel or faux fur. Keep the palette to two colors plus white or cream.
A tree or basket in the path to the door. Leave about 24 inches of clear floor on the side of the bed you get out of. Trees go in a corner, and cords run along the baseboard, never across the walkway.
How to Wash Flannel Sheets So They Stay Soft Past January
Four of these beds are made with flannel, and flannel is easy to ruin in the first month.
Wash a new set once before it goes on the bed, in cool or warm water, never hot.
That first wash clears the loose lint, which is what turns into pills later.
Skip the fabric softener. It coats the brushed fibers and leaves them flat and a little waxy.
Dry on low heat and take the sheets out while they’re still slightly warm. High heat is what makes flannel go thin and stiff.
Wash flannel on its own, or with other soft cottons, so towels and zippers don’t rough up the nap.
Start with the bed. One set of flannel sheets or two pillow covers changes the room more than a shelf full of ornaments.
Then add one light source on a timer: a slim tree, a wreath or candles on the sill.
If the room still feels calm when the lights go off, you got it right.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to sleep with Christmas lights on in a bedroom?
I wouldn’t leave them on all night. Use the timer so they switch off shortly after you fall asleep, and turn off plug-in lights whenever you leave the house. Keep every string away from bedding and curtains.
How do I decorate a small bedroom for Christmas?
Use surfaces you already have instead of adding furniture. A nightstand trio (idea 3), a pencil tree in a corner (idea 9) or a lit birch by the window (idea 17) take almost no floor. One idea per small room is plenty.
How do I put a garland on a headboard without nails?
Rest it on the top ledge and tie it at each end with ribbon or green floral wire. On a metal or spindle frame, wind it around the rail. Nothing goes into the wall, so it’s fine for renters.
What colors work for a calm Christmas bedroom?
Green and white is the easiest. Sage, ivory, cream and one deep red such as burgundy or garnet all stay restful. Bright red works best in small doses, like a pillow or a throw at the foot.
Do I need Christmas bedding, or will plain bedding work?
Plain works. White or cream bedding with one seasonal layer, a plaid throw, velvet pillows or a garland on the headboard, reads as Christmas straight away. It also means nothing has to be stored for eleven months.
