Most Christmas tree ideas fail for one reason: they show you a finished tree and never tell you what’s actually on it.
So I built this list the other way round. Each of these 23 trees starts from two or three real pieces you can buy right now, from a red cable knit skirt to a strand of brass beads.
In most cases the tree itself is the one you already own.
You’ll find classic red, flocked, plaid and woodland looks here, plus white Christmas tree ideas, a slim tree for a small apartment and a tabletop one for the dresser.
Pick one palette, repeat it from top to bottom, and stop earlier than you think you should.

1. Classic Red and Gold Baubles, Berry Sprays and a Red Cable Knit Skirt

Red only looks classic when you repeat it at three heights: baubles through the branches, berry sprays poking past them, and a solid red skirt on the floor.
The baubles are all one size, so the berry stems are what break up the outline. Each spray is sold singly, so buy several.
Gold stays the supporting act here.

2. Flocked Fraser Fir with Frosted Pinecone Stems and a Beige Fur Skirt

A flocked tree already is the decoration, so I add almost nothing to this one.
Tuck a few frosted pine and pinecone stems deep into the branches so they look like part of the tree, then let a beige faux fur skirt soften the base.
In a dark, low-ceilinged room, nothing brightens a corner faster.
Shop this room: Frosted Fraser Fir Artificial Christmas Tree: Lit at Quince, Frosted Green Faux Cluster Pine and Natural Pinecones Stem at World Market and AISENO 48 Inch Christmas Tree Skirt – Beige Faux Fur Plush on Amazon.

3. Green Velvet Bows, Brass Beads and a Spruce Velvet Skirt

Green on green is the calmest tree you can build, because nothing fights the branches.
Tie the velvet bows to the branch tips and drape the brass bead strand across the front at eye level, since one six-foot strand won’t circle a tall tree. The quilted spruce velvet skirt finishes it.
Tonal beats colorful in a room full of books.

4. Scandinavian Sparse Tree with Candle Lights and a Lit Rattan Star

A sparse tree needs air more than ornaments. On an open-branched tree you already have, I stop at two things: beige candle lights along the branch ends and a lit rattan star on top.
The candles are one wired string, so start at the plug. It suits a narrow landing or a bright Scandinavian living room.
Empty branches are the point.

5. Red Knit Sweater Baubles, White Wood Beads and Striped Bows

Knit-covered baubles are the softest way to do red and white, and nothing on this tree is glass.
Run the white wood beads in shallow swags first, then hang the red sweater balls between them. The jute garland of striped fabric bows goes on last, low on the tree where the stripes show.
This is the family-room tree I’d pick with a dog around.

6. Slim Pencil Tree in Olive with an Antique Gold Star

For small Christmas tree ideas, go up, not out.
This pre-lit pencil tree stands about seven feet tall on a footprint near two and a half feet, with lightly flocked tips and pinecones built in. Olive baubles and an antique gold star finish it.
It frees floor you’d rather keep for storage in a small living room.

7. Faux Dried Orange Garland, Wood Beads and a Woven Collar

Faux orange slices are the honest choice if you want this tree to come back out next year.
Drape the orange garland and the natural wood beads in loose, uneven swags, then set the brown-wash woven collar over the stand.
Orange against deep green is all the color a dining nook needs.

8. Blue and Silver Tree on a Grey Cable Knit Skirt

Blue and silver is the one cool palette I like in a north-facing room, because the silver throws daylight back.
Most of the shine comes from one big shatterproof set, star topper included. Save the ten silver glass ornaments for eye level, where they catch the light.
Cool colors need one warm texture, and here it’s the grey knit on the floor.

9. Tartan Ribbon Cascades with Oversized Matte Red Baubles

Ribbon does more for a plaid tree than plaid ornaments ever will.
Run the wider tartan roll down the tree in loose vertical cascades, tie a bow for the top, and hang six oversized matte red balls deep between the runs. A few gifts in plaid paper hide the stand.
Big, plain baubles let the tartan read.

10. White Christmas Tree with Pearl Baubles and an Ivory Fur Skirt

A white Christmas tree only feels warm when everything on it leans ivory, not blue-white.
The tree itself isn’t linked, so start with a white artificial tree you own. Add warm white lights, the two pearl glass baubles front and center, and the wavy ivory faux fur skirt.
Pale wood nearby stops the white feeling cold.

11. Woodland Tree with Clip-On Sparrows, Wood Mushrooms and Burlap

The birds make this tree, so clip the six feathered sparrows where a real one would land: out on the branch ends, at different heights.
Scatter the tiny wooden mushrooms close to the trunk, where their bright painted caps read as a surprise, then lay plain burlap underneath.
A woodland tree should look found, not arranged.

12. Tabletop Tree on the Dresser with Mini Green Glass Balls

No floor space is not a reason to skip the tree.
A three-foot tabletop tree on the dresser takes one string of battery fairy lights and a scatter of one-inch green glass balls. It comes on a plain stand, not in a pot.
Small Christmas tree ideas work best when everything on the tree is small too.

13. Gold and Cream Glass Baubles, Sheer Gold Ribbon and a Brass Star

Four good glass baubles beat forty forgettable ones, as long as you treat them like jewelry.
Let sheer gold organza ribbon fall from the top of a lit tree in loose cascades, hang the gold and cream baubles at eye level, and crown it with the antique brass star.
This one is at its best at dusk with the overhead light off.

14. Burgundy Velvet Ribbon Spiral with Warm Cluster Lights

You can dress a whole tree in fifteen minutes with ribbon and lights.
Wrap the warm cluster lights first, spiral the four-inch burgundy velvet ribbon from top to bottom, then tie a big bow from the same roll for the top. The ribbon’s thin gold edge catches the light.
I don’t miss the ornaments at all.

15. Kids’ Tree with a Felt Pom Pom Garland and Painted Wood Icons

A kids’ tree should be touchable, which rules out glass and anything precious.
On a short tree at child height, wind the tiny felt pom pom garland around the branches and hang the painted wooden skier, sled, stocking and Santa where small hands can reach them.
Let them redecorate it daily.
Shop this room: Mini Felt Christmas Color Pom Pom Garland at World Market and Mini Wood Christmas Icon Ornaments 14 Pack at World Market.
16. Black and White Baubles, Gingham Ribbon and a Black Collar

Black and white works on a tree because the green becomes the third color.
Tie the gingham ribbon into bows at the branch tips, mix the black and white baubles evenly, and snap the black collar together around the stand. The collar is plastic rather than metal, in twelve panels.
Graphic, and still calm.

17. Small Tree in a Striped Jute Basket with White Enamel Stars

A basket is the softest tree collar there is.
Stand a four-foot spruce in a jute basket with white cotton stripes, then hang chunky white enamel stars on the branches. Measure your tree stand against the basket’s opening before you order.
I’d leave this small Christmas tree unlit in a bedroom and let the white stars do the work.

18. Copper Orange Baubles, Copper Wire Lights and a Cream Knit Skirt

Copper orange is the warm answer to red, and it suits cream walls far better.
Thread the copper wire lights through the branches first, then hang the copper orange baubles in three sizes with the largest lowest. The lights run off USB, so you’ll need a wall plug for them.
A cream cable knit skirt underneath keeps all that copper soft.

19. Kitchen Tree with Cranberry Beads, Gingerbread Ornaments and Check Bows

A kitchen tree should look edible and be nothing of the sort.
On a small slim tree at the end of the counter, swag the red wood bead garland like strung cranberries, hang the gingerbread men and houses, and tie red and white buffalo check bows. The gingerbread pieces are soft PVC, not clay.
It’s the cheeriest of the small Christmas tree ideas here.

20. Vintage Glass Tree with Silver Mercury Ornaments and a Beaded Garland

Old-style glass needs a lit tree behind it, because the whole effect is light bouncing around inside the branches.
Drape the hand-painted glass garland first, then hang the two long silver mercury ornaments and the etched silver onion near the bulbs. The garland is brighter than faded, so it carries the color.
Skip the topper and let the glass do it.
Shop this room: Mercury Glass Ornaments (Set of 2) at McGee & Co, Glass Beads and Baubles Vintage Style Garland at World Market and Antique Silver Glass Etched Onion Ornament at World Market.
21. Faux Pampas Stems, Cream Velvet Baubles and a Braided Wicker Collar

Pampas on a tree sounds fussy until you see how much it softens a slim shape.
On a slim flocked tree you already have, push the short faux pampas stems in at an upward angle between the branches (plan on a few packs). Add the cream velvet-finish baubles and set the braided wicker collar at the base.
All texture, almost no shine.

22. Lights-Only Fraser Fir with One Big Paper Star

The best-looking tree in the house can be one with nothing on it but light.
This pre-lit faux Fraser fir gets a second layer of warm cluster lights pushed deep toward the trunk, so it glows from the inside out. Tie the big white paper star to the top with its own ribbon, since it’s made to hang.
Restraint looks expensive.

23. Soft Neutral Tree with Tonal Glass Ornaments, Tan Ribbon and an Ivory Knit Skirt

Soft neutral isn’t the same as plain. It works when the finishes change even though the color doesn’t.
Mix the glossy and matte glass ornaments, tuck the tan linen-look ribbon into vertical runs, and ground it all with a chunky ivory cable knit skirt. It sits quietly in a calm, pared-back living room.
This is the one I’d put up myself.

Why Your Tree Looks Sparse Even With Plenty of Ornaments
The usual mistake is hanging everything on the outer tips. The tree ends up with a decorated shell and a dark, empty middle.
Push your largest, plainest baubles deep toward the trunk, where they bounce the lights back out. Save the special pieces for the branch ends at eye level.
Work in three depths and a modest box of ornaments suddenly looks like plenty.
The same goes for lights. Wrap some along the branches toward the trunk, not only around the outside.
Start with the base. Swapping a tired skirt for a knit one, a basket or a woven collar changes the whole tree before you hang a single thing.
Then choose one look from this list and commit to its palette. A tree in three colors always looks calmer than a tree in nine.
Frequently Asked Questions
What goes on a Christmas tree first?
Lights first, then ribbon or garland, then ornaments from largest to smallest. The topper goes on last, once you can see how full the top looks.
How many ornaments does a 7 foot tree need?
A common rule of thumb is roughly 10 to 15 ornaments per foot of tree. You need fewer if ribbon, garland or picks are doing part of the work, as they do in most of these looks.
Should I use a tree skirt or a tree collar?
A collar keeps the footprint tight, which helps in a small room or a busy hallway. A skirt gives gifts somewhere soft to sit and suits a tree with space around it.
What is the best Christmas tree for a small apartment?
A slim pencil tree if you have a free corner, or a tabletop tree on a dresser or console if you don’t. Both give you a real decorated tree without giving up floor space.
How do I stop a white or neutral tree from looking cold?
Use warm white bulbs, never cool white, and choose ivory over bright white. Then add texture at the base with knit, faux fur or wicker.
