18 DIY Christmas Decor Ideas

I went looking for Christmas decor ideas DIY beginners can actually finish in one evening. Most of what I found needed a workshop, or ended up looking like a school project.

The difference between handmade and homemade is almost never skill. It is restraint: two or three materials, one color story and a clean finish.

So this is DIY Christmas decor with two or three supplies per project and nothing sharper than scissors. Twine, floral wire and a low-temp glue gun cover the rest.

There is a DIY Christmas wreath for the front door, a dried orange garland, clay stars, a five minute centerpiece and fourteen more.

It is the same natural-materials approach I use for pared-back fall decorating, moved on a season.

Nothing here needs a drill. Everything hangs from a ribbon, a door knob or a removable hook, so all 18 work in a small rented apartment like mine.

One shopping note: cinnamon sticks, whole cloves and fresh oranges come from the grocery store, so they are not linked below.

1. Asymmetric Eucalyptus Wreath with a Linen Sash

DIY Christmas wreath on a front door: a grapevine base with faux eucalyptus wired to one side and a natural linen sash hanging in two long tails

Cut two or three faux eucalyptus sprays into hand-length pieces. Wire them to the left side of a bare grapevine base with floral wire, every stem pointing the same way, from the bottom up to ten o’clock.

Tie the linen sash at the top and let both tails hang. Half an hour.

Leave the other half of the vine bare. That empty stretch is what makes it look bought.

Shop this room: Ruisita 18 Inch Grapevine Wreath, Natural Vine Branch Wreath Base on Amazon, Faux Eucalyptus Spray at World Market and Linen Wreath Sash at McGee & Co.

2. Dried Orange and Wood Bead Window Garland

DIY Christmas decor at a living room window: a garland of dried orange slices and raw wood beads on jute twine with a lit Christmas tree at the edge

Thread jute twine through each dried orange slice twice, in and out just under the rind, so the slice sits flat and faces the room. Slide on three raw wood beads of one size, then the next slice.

Five to six feet covers most windows, hung from two removable hooks. Allow about 40 minutes.

Count the beads every time. Even spacing is the whole difference between crafted and bought.

3. White Clay Star Ornaments for the Tree

Handmade white air-dry clay star ornaments hanging on white twine from a green Christmas tree with warm lights

Roll white air-dry clay a quarter inch thick and press out stars in two or three sizes. Poke a hole near one point with a straw, then smooth every edge with a damp fingertip.

Dry them flat for a day or two, turning once, and hang on white cotton twine.

Cutting takes me twenty minutes. I never skip the smoothing, because a ragged edge says homemade.

4. Snowy Jar Forest on the Bookshelf

DIY Christmas decor on a bookshelf: three clear glass jars holding dark green and silver bottle brush trees standing in faux snow

Pour an inch of dry faux snow into a clear glass storage jar. Stand three bottle brush trees of different sizes in it, dark green and silver mixed, and close the lid.

Two or three jars in a row on one cleared shelf read as a small winter village. Ten minutes, no glue.

Most people crowd the jar. Three trees and plenty of empty glass looks far more expensive.

5. Kraft Paper Gifts with Twine and Cedar

Christmas gifts wrapped in brown kraft paper with white cotton twine and a cedar sprig under each knot, stacked under a lit Christmas tree

Wrap every gift in the same plain brown kraft paper and run a thumbnail along each edge for a crisp crease. Wind white cotton twine around twice and knot it on top.

Snip a faux cedar spray into short sprigs and tuck one under each knot.

One paper, one twine, one green for the whole pile. The repetition is what makes it look like a shop wrapped them.

6. White Paper Bag Stars Above the Bed

Three large white paper bag stars hanging at different heights above a bed with oat linen bedding in a calm Christmas bedroom

Glue seven to nine white paper lunch bags into a stack, with glue stick along the bottom and up the center of each. Cut the open end to a point, fan the stack into a circle and glue the first bag to the last.

Fifteen minutes a star. Hang them on thread from removable hooks.

I hang three at different heights. A single star looks like a school project.

7. Chunky Wood Bead Garland on the Mantel

DIY wood bead garland with beige tassels draped along a white mantel with cedar sprigs and Christmas stockings

String about 75 of the 20 mm wood beads onto the jute from the pack for a five foot garland. Knot hard against the last bead at each end and tie on a beige tassel.

Drape it along the mantel in one loose swag beside a few cedar sprigs. Twenty minutes.

Keep every bead the same size. Mixed sizes make a bead garland look like a craft kit.

8. Cedar Ring Centerpiece with Three Tapers

DIY Christmas centerpiece on a small round dining table: a faux cedar ring laid flat with three antique beige taper candles in brass holders

Lay the faux cedar wreath flat on the table and fluff the stems outward. Stand three antique brass holders close together in the open center and add the antique beige tapers, which takes five minutes.

Group the holders tight instead of spacing them out. A cluster looks arranged.

Never leave lit tapers unattended, and keep every flame clear of the greenery. Flameless tapers give the same glow.

Shop this room: Green Soft Touch Faux Cedar Wreath at World Market, Antique Beige Taper Candles (Set of 12) at McGee & Co and Antique Brass Taper Candle Holder at McGee & Co.

9. Stair Garland Spiralled in Ivory Ribbon

Faux pine Christmas garland tied along an oak stair banister with wide ivory chiffon ribbon spiralled around its full length

Lay the faux pine garland along the banister and tie it on every two feet with short lengths of the ivory chiffon ribbon, no nails needed.

Then wind one full roll around rail and garland together in a loose spiral, top to bottom. A standard stair run takes two garlands and about half an hour.

Keep the turns evenly spaced. Random wraps look like the garland is being held together.

10. Cinnamon Stick Candles on a Wood Tray

Two white pillar candles wrapped in cinnamon sticks and tied with jute twine on a small acacia wood tray on a Christmas kitchen counter

Slip a rubber band around a white pillar candle and tuck cinnamon sticks under it, side by side, until the wax is hidden. Wrap jute twine over the band and knot it.

Three to four inch sticks come from the grocery spice aisle. Two candles fill the acacia tray, ten minutes each.

I leave these unlit, since the cinnamon sits right at the wick. Use a flameless pillar for a glow.

11. Gold Hoop Wreath with Pine and Berries

Modern DIY Christmas wreath above an entryway console: a slim gold metal hoop with faux pine and frosted burgundy berries on the lower third

Cut one faux pine stem into short sprigs and fix them to the bottom third of a gold metal hoop with floral wire, fanning out from the center. Wire pieces of the frosted burgundy berry spray on top to hide the joins.

It hangs from one removable hook. Twenty minutes.

Stop at a third. The bare gold is the design, and more greenery makes it an ordinary wreath.

12. Cream Yarn Cone Trees on the Sideboard

Three cone Christmas trees wrapped in chunky cream chenille yarn standing on a walnut living room sideboard with tree lights behind

Put a dot of low-temp glue at the base of a paper mache cone and press in the end of the cream chenille yarn. Wind upward in tight rows, each touching the last, and glue the tail at the tip.

Ten minutes a cone. Stand three or all five on the sideboard.

If brown paper shows between rows, push the yarn down before the glue sets. Gaps are the giveaway.

13. Floating Candle Vases with Red Berries

DIY Christmas centerpiece on a kitchen island: three glass cylinder vases of water with floating white candles and red faux berries laid around the bases

Fill the three glass cylinders with water to the same distance below each rim and float one white candle in each. Cut the red faux berry spray into three and lay the pieces around the bases, not in the water.

Match the water lines. Uneven levels look improvised.

For color in the glass, float fresh cranberries from the grocery store. Never leave lit candles alone, or use flameless ones.

14. Winter Porch Pot of Pine and Pinecones

Winter porch planter filled with tall faux weeping pine stems and natural pinecones beside a front door with a Christmas wreath

Push three to five tall faux weeping pine stems into the soil of a planter you already own, tallest at the back. Trim one or two shorter so the heights step down.

Pile natural pinecones over the soil. Ten minutes, best on a covered porch or balcony.

Bare soil at the rim is the mistake. Cover it all and the pot looks like a florist filled it.

15. Brass Bell Door Hanger on Gold Velvet

Three brass-finish Christmas bells in graded sizes hanging on antique gold velvet ribbon from the knob of a white bedroom door with a cedar sprig

Take the three brass-finish iron bells off their rope and thread each one onto its own length of narrow antique gold velvet ribbon. Knot the three ribbons together at the top, then loop them over the door knob.

A leftover cedar sprig tucked into the knot is optional. Fifteen minutes.

Stagger the lengths so each bell hangs clear of the next. Bunched together they look like spare ornaments.

16. Potted Mini Trees on the Windowsill

Four mini faux Christmas trees in terracotta pots topped with green moss lined up on a deep home office windowsill with snow outside

Set each mini faux tree, wooden base and all, into a terracotta pot and wedge it upright with crumpled paper. Cover the top with dried green moss.

The tallest goes in the scalloped terracotta planter, the other three in plain small pots from a garden center. Twenty minutes for a deep windowsill.

Hide the base completely. A visible wooden stand makes a mini tree look like a toy.

17. Clove Orange Pomander Bowl

Clove studded orange pomanders piled in a pale beech wood bowl with faux cedar sprigs on a living room coffee table at Christmas

Prick a line of holes in a fresh orange with a toothpick, then press a whole clove into each. Rings or stripes take fifteen minutes an orange.

Oranges and cloves come from the grocery store. Pile them in the beech wood bowl with snipped faux cedar, and swap out any that turn soft.

Repeat simple patterns. Random dots look like a kids’ craft, straight lines look deliberate.

Shop this room: Handmade Wood Serving Bowl, 12″ in Beech Wood at Quince and Green Fluffy Faux Cedar Stem at World Market.

18. Long-Tail Velvet Bows on the Hallway Frames

Burgundy velvet bows with long tails fixed to the top of black picture frames on a hallway gallery wall, a cedar sprig behind the largest bow

Cut a yard of burgundy velvet ribbon per frame and tie a plain bow with long tails. Turn the velvet side out and cut the tails on a slant.

Stick an adhesive strip behind the knot and press it to the top of the frame. Five minutes a bow, plus a cedar sprig behind the biggest.

Make every bow the same size. Matching bows look like a set you bought.

6 DIY Christmas Decor Mistakes That Give Away the Handmade

Tick each one off before you call the room done.

☐  Glue strings left on show. Put every dot of glue on the back or the base, and pull the fine threads off once it has cooled. Where a join faces the room, use wire or twine instead.

☐  Too many colors in one piece. Hold each project to three: one green, one natural material and one accent. A fourth color is usually where it starts to look like a craft table.

☐  Clay rolled too thin. Keep ornaments about a quarter inch thick and dry them flat for 24 to 48 hours, turning once. Thinner clay curls at the points and cracks.

☐  Ribbon tails cut straight across. Cut every tail on a 45 degree slant or into a V notch, and leave at least 12 inches hanging. Short blunt tails read as gift wrap.

☐  Orange slices strung while still tacky. Only thread slices that are fully dry and stiff. If you dry your own, give them 2 to 3 hours in a 200 degree oven and wait until they no longer feel sticky.

☐  All 18 projects in one room. Give each room one or two handmade pieces and leave the next surface empty. Three in a single view is the most I would go.

The Short Shopping List That Covers Half of These Projects

Half of these projects draw on the same few supplies, so shop for the list, not for one project.

A roll of jute twine strings the orange garland and the wood beads and ties the cinnamon candles. White cotton twine wraps the gifts and hangs the clay stars.

One long faux cedar spray, snipped small, finishes the gifts, the mantel, the bell hanger and the hallway bows.

Add a reel of floral wire for the two wreaths, and nine projects are covered before you buy anything specific.

Start with the one spot you look at most, whether that is the front door, the shelf by the sofa or the kitchen counter.

The jar forest and the kraft paper gifts take ten minutes each and need no glue, so they are the easy first win.

Make one, live with it for a day, then pick the next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which DIY Christmas decor is easiest for a complete beginner?

The snowy jar forest, the cedar ring centerpiece and the porch pot. Each is a matter of placing things, with no glue, wire or cutting beyond trimming a stem.

Can I make all of these in a rental?

Yes. Every piece hangs from a removable hook, an adhesive strip, a ribbon or a door knob, or simply sits on a surface. None of them needs a nail or a drill.

How far ahead can I make them?

Anything faux, wood, paper or yarn can be made in November and will look the same in January. Clay stars need a day or two to dry.The clove oranges are the exception: make them the week you want them.

Do I really need a glue gun?

Only for the yarn cone trees, and a low-temp one is enough. Everything else is tied, wired, threaded or held with a glue stick.

How do I store handmade decorations so they last?

Keep paper stars folded flat in a large envelope and wrap clay stars individually in tissue. Dried orange garlands go in a paper bag somewhere dry, and get thrown out if a slice ever softens.
