14 Christmas Staircase Ideas

Christmas staircase decor has one job most decorating doesn’t. It has to look good on something you walk down half asleep with a laundry basket.

So every idea here keeps the treads completely clear and the handrail free to grip. Garland goes on the outside of the balusters or along the base rail, and every light runs on batteries.

All 14 start from garland and warm lights. What changes is the technique: deep swags, a low lit line, a newel post wreath, velvet bows, lanterns beside the first step, paper stars over the landing.

There is a Christmas garland staircase for a wide entry hall, and one for a boxed-in stair with no balusters at all. Two are rental safe and need only removable hooks.

I’ve named the piece that does the work in each, and said exactly where it goes so nobody trips on it.

1. Deep Cedar Swags on the Outside of a White Banister

Christmas staircase decor with deep cedar garland swags and warm white lights tied to the outside of a white painted banister with an oak handrail and clear oak treads

A swag looks generous because of its drop, so let each one hang 8 to 10 inches.

Tie the cedar to the hall side of the balusters, below the handrail, every fourth baluster. A 9 foot length covers about 6 feet swagged, so most stairs take two.

Designer tip: add a battery light string and hide the pack behind the newel.

2. A Pre-Lit Garland Run Low Along the Base Rail

Christmas garland staircase idea: a lit plain green fir garland laid along the base rail of a dark oak staircase, handrail bare and treads clear, in an evening hallway

Dark oak swallows light, so a glowing line at the stair’s lowest edge works hard.

Lay the plain green fir straight along the base rail, outside the balusters, and leave the handrail bare.

It is 9 feet long and battery powered, so no cord goes near a step.

Designer tip: wire in a few real pinecones for texture.

3. Newel Post Only: One Lit Fir Wreath

Christmas stairs decor for a narrow cottage staircase: one 24 inch lit fir wreath on a wide olive ribbon at the newel post, a small lantern on the hall floor, bare handrail and clear steps

A narrow cottage stair has no room for a banister garland, so decorate the post and stop.

This pre-lit fir wreath is 24 inches across, wide for a slim newel. Hang it on the post’s wall side, or on the stair wall if the post is narrow.

Designer tip: one wide olive ribbon is all the color it needs.

Shop this room: National Tree Company Pre-Lit Fir Wreath, 24 in, Battery on Amazon and Keypan Moss Green Wide Satin Ribbon, 2.5 in on Amazon.

4. Slim Pine Swags With a Cinnamon Velvet Bow at Every Tie

Staircase Christmas decorations on a black metal banister: slim pine garland in shallow swags with small cinnamon-brown velvet bows at each tie, pale oak treads clear, one lantern on the hall floor

Bows hide the ties and give a plain garland rhythm. These are small, about 5 by 10 inches, in cinnamon-brown velvet, so pair them with a slim garland.

Twelve come in a pack, enough for a bow every third baluster on most stairs.

Designer tip: keep everything outside the balusters and trim each tail above tread level.

Shop this room: Hongsome Velvet Ribbon Bows in Brown, 12 Pack on Amazon and CLEANGOR 2 Pack 6 ft Norfolk Pine Garlands on Amazon.

5. Three Black Lanterns on the Floor Beside the First Step

Christmas staircase decor with three open-frame black metal lanterns and glowing flameless candles on the hall floor beside the first step, cedar garland on the banister and a clear carpet runner

Lanterns belong beside a stair, never on it.

Group these three open-frame black lanterns on the hall floor by the bottom step, tallest at the back.

No glass to clean, and the LED candles run on a timer.

Designer tip: a fourth lantern in the landing’s dead corner means buying a second set.

6. A Wreath Gallery Climbing the Stair Wall

Christmas staircase decor on the wall: five small boxwood wreaths on red ribbon rising diagonally up the stair wall above the handrail, a thin lit garland on the banister opposite, steps clear

Five small wreaths stepping up the wall repeat the angle of the stair, which is why this looks designed.

These 10 inch boxwood wreaths are sold singly, so buy five and add ribbon. Hang each on a removable hook above shoulder height, clear of the wall handrail.

Designer tip: red ribbon is what turns boxwood into Christmas.

7. Garland and Fairy Lights on the Wall Above the Rail

Christmas garland staircase idea for an enclosed stair: a slim eucalyptus and pine garland with warm white fairy lights swagged on a sage wall above a wall-mounted birch handrail, treads clear

An enclosed stair has no balusters, so the wall carries the greenery. Hang a slim eucalyptus and pine garland on removable hooks, a hand’s width above the handrail.

It never touches the rail, so your grip is free all the way up.

Designer tip: thread one 33 foot string of warm white battery lights up and back down.

8. Brass Bells on the Newel of an Open-Tread Stair

Christmas stairs decor on a loft staircase with open oak treads: three brass-finish bells on twine hanging from a black metal newel post over a small collar of lit greenery, treads empty

Open treads show everything, so keep the decoration on the post.

Three brass-finish bells on twine hang from the newel, over a short collar of greenery with battery lights.

The three sizes make it look collected.

Designer tip: hang them on the room side of the post, and let nothing dangle through the gaps.

9. White Paper Stars Hung High Above the Landing

Christmas staircase decor with three white paper star lanterns glowing above a half landing window at dusk, a thin green garland along the landing rail and clear pale wood steps

Light from above pulls the eye up the stair. Hang three 12 inch white paper stars at different heights over the landing, well above head height.

They are paper shades, so the glow is yours to add: one small battery light inside each.

Designer tip: keep the garland on the landing rail thin and unlit.

10. Cable-Knit Stockings Tied to the Banister

Staircase Christmas decorations with cream cable-knit stockings tied to the outside of white balusters under a lit cedar garland, sisal stair runner clear and handrail bare

No mantel? The staircase does the job.

Tie cream cable-knit stockings to the hall side of the balusters, every fourth baluster, toes above the tread line.

A pack holds four, so a long banister needs two.

Designer tip: run a lit cedar garland along the outside above them and leave the handrail bare.

11. A Tartan Runner at the Foot of the Stairs

Christmas staircase decor seen from the landing: a red and green tartan runner on the hall floor at the foot of the stairs, a lit pine garland on the banister and bare dark treads

Pattern on the floor lets the banister stay simple: one plain pine garland with warm battery lights.

This woven cotton tartan is 2 by 6 feet. It lies on the hall floor, stops short of the first step and never goes on the treads.

Designer tip: put a non-slip rug pad underneath, because flat-woven cotton slides.

12. Dried Orange Slices Strung Along the Balusters

Christmas stairs decor on a short apartment staircase: dried orange slices on twine strung along the outside of plain square balusters with cedar sprigs and warm micro lights, steps clear

Burnt orange against cedar green is the warmest pairing here. The slices come loose, so thread them onto your own twine about 4 inches apart.

Run the string baluster to baluster at mid height, on the outside.

Designer tip: tie in a cedar sprig every few slices and run warm micro lights behind so the fruit glows.

13. The Under-Stair Nook Framed in Pine and Wood Beads

Christmas staircase decor under the stairs: a nook framed with pine garland and a fine wood bead garland, lit from inside with warm lights, a small lit tree and a folded wool blanket

Decorating under the stair leaves every step and rail untouched.

Outline the sloped opening with a pine garland, then drape 16 feet of small wood-colored beads across it in shallow loops.

The beads are fine, not chunky, so the frame stays delicate.

Designer tip: light the nook from inside with battery lights and one small lamp.

Shop this room: WILLBOND Wood Bead Garland, 16 Feet on Amazon, CLEANGOR 2 Pack 6 ft Norfolk Pine Garlands on Amazon and MASHANG 33 ft Warm White Micro LED Lights on Amazon.

14. One Long Garland Draped Off a Single Side

Christmas garland staircase with one long lit pine garland draped off one side of a wide entry hall banister, held by green ties, its tail falling down the newel to the hall floor beside a lantern

Asymmetry looks relaxed where even swags look formal. Fasten one long pine garland at three points outside the balusters and let the tail fall down the newel.

Fabric-covered twist ties hold it with no tape, no nails and no scratches.

Designer tip: the tail pools on the hall floor beside the newel, never on the bottom step.

6 Christmas Staircase Mistakes to Skip

Tick each one off before you call the room done.

☐  Garland wrapped around the handrail you use. Tie it to the outside of the balusters, below the rail, or lay it along the base rail. Your hand should slide from top to bottom without touching a needle.

☐  A light cord crossing a step. Use battery strings and pre-lit battery garlands on a stair. Hide the pack behind the newel post, where you can still reach the switch.

☐  Anything standing on a tread. Lanterns, gifts and baskets go on the hall floor beside the first step, or in a landing corner outside the walking line. A full tread is about 10 inches deep and your foot needs all of it.

☐  Garland the same length as the rail. Swags eat length. Buy about one and a half times the rail length, so a 12 foot rail takes two 9 foot garlands.

☐  Tape, nails or bare wire on the banister. Use fabric-covered twist ties, soft floral wire or ribbon. They hold a garland at every third or fourth baluster and come off without marking the finish.

☐  Real candles anywhere near the stairs. Keep every flame flameless here. LED pillar candles on a timer give the same glow beside dry greenery, coats and passing sleeves.

How to Measure Your Staircase for Garland Before You Buy

Garland is sold in 6 and 9 foot lengths, and stairs are not.

Measure the handrail along its slope, from the newel post to the top, not the floor underneath it.

For a garland laid straight, buy that length plus about a foot. For swags, multiply by one and a half, because every dip uses extra.

So a 12 foot rail needs about 18 feet, which is two 9 foot garlands joined at a tie point.

I add 3 more feet when I want a tail down the newel post.

Then count the balusters. One tie every third or fourth baluster gives even swags, and it tells you how many ties or bows to buy.

Start with the newel post. One wreath, a cluster of bells or a garland tail there reads from the front door and touches nothing you hold or step on.

Then add one garland on the outside of the balusters and one battery light string, and walk the stairs before you call it done.

If your hand and your feet never meet the decoration, it will still look good in January.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much garland do I need for a staircase?

Measure the handrail along its slope. Buy that length plus a foot for a straight run, or about one and a half times the length for swags.A typical 12 foot rail takes two 9 foot garlands when swagged.

How do you attach garland to a banister without damaging it?

Use fabric-covered twist ties, soft floral wire or ribbon at every third or fourth baluster. Skip tape, which can lift the finish, and nails. All three come off clean, so this works in a rental.

Is it safe to put garland on a stair handrail?

Only on a rail nobody needs to hold. If the rail is in daily use, move the garland to the outside of the balusters, the base rail or the wall above, and keep the rail bare.

How do you decorate stairs that have no banister?

Use the wall. Hang a slim garland on removable hooks a hand’s width above the wall-mounted handrail, or step small wreaths up the wall above shoulder height. The steps themselves stay empty.

Can I use plug-in lights on a staircase?

Only if the cord can run up the wall or along the baseboard to an outlet without crossing a step. If it can’t, use battery lights, which is what I would do on any stair.
